Avid cyclists John Gill and Bill Engel decided to participate in this year’s Race Across America not for just for the physical challenge, but also for the opportunity to raise awareness for DAV and its mission to support our nation’s heroes.

“I just have so much respect for veterans. If you think about it, people just sign up to put their life on the line so we can live the way we live,” said Engel. “No matter what you think about the world, or what your perspective is, you can't help but respect that. It's the definition of courage, heroism and bravery.”

The race started June 15 in Oceanside, California, and ended around nine days later in Atlantic City, New Jersey. Due to unforeseen circumstances Gill and Engel were not able to fully finish the race, but their impact and mission continues, as does that of DAV. Support for our nation’s veterans is not a one event goal, but a continuous effort to create victories for veterans and that they continue to support in other ways.

“As a fellow cyclist, I know the dedication it takes to participate in a race of that magnitude. I am deeply grateful to Bill and John for all their efforts to create awareness and raise funds for DAV,” said DAV National Commander Nancy Espinosa. “It’s because of people like them that we are able to provide services free of charge and keep our promise to America’s veterans.”
