Your organization can support veterans by hosting Field of Flags
As the daughter of a Korean War veteran, Bonnie Garafano knows the lasting impact of military service. It’s why she registered her American Heritage Girls troop to take part in DAV Field of Flags—a decision rooted in her desire to pass on values of service, gratitude and civic responsibility to the next generation.
“Our faith is important, our country is important, our community is important—and it's all part of our oath and our creed,” she said. “I wanted these girls to understand what being a veteran is, what they did for us, and how we still need to look out for our veterans for all that they've done.”
Field of Flags is a national program that invites communities to create stunning patriotic displays while supporting life-changing services for disabled veterans. Each flag planted serves as a personal tribute—telling a story of courage, sacrifice and service.
Across the country, schools, clubs and civic groups like Bonnie’s have embraced the initiative as a powerful way to unite people around a common purpose. It’s more than a visual display—it’s a reminder that freedom comes at a cost and a chance to give back to those who paid it.
To receive a Field of Flags kit, participating organizations must raise a minimum of $250. Each kit includes 24 American flags and other helpful tools and resources.
Knowing they’d need support, Bonnie’s troop turned to their community. “We partnered with our church, used social media, contacted the local newspapers and had the girls fundraise at local businesses and libraries,” she said. “The community really loved our efforts.”
With funds secured, they planted their field at a local church in the week leading up to Veterans Day.
“The community really loved our field,” Bonnie said. “As we were putting the flags out, cars would honk in support. Our local paper even featured us with a picture of the display.”
Field of Flags is a creative and easy way for any organization to give back to America’s veterans.
When asked what she would say to encourage other organizations to participate, Bonnie shared “Just do it! It was such an easy process, but it was also very rewarding.”
