Looking for a meaningful 5K race that supports veterans? The DAV 5K run, walk, roll and ride event gives participants the opportunity to honor those who served while raising critical funds to support veterans, their families and caregivers. For Air Force veteran Jay Crawford, participating in the DAV 5K race became an opportunity to continue serving his community after retirement.

After retiring from a 28-year military career, Crawford joined DAV and became a member of Chapter 13 in Yorktown, Virginia.

When Chapter 13 Commander Charmonia Odom learned about Crawford's past military experience as a telecommunications specialist and his work in the cyber community, she recognized he had the organizational skills needed to lead the chapter's annual virtual DAV 5K. Odom encouraged him to take on the role, and Crawford accepted, seeing it as an opportunity to try something new.

He started by learning how to organize the event and the best way to fundraise. As a first-time fundraiser, he focused on keeping his approach simple and personal. About 90 days before the event, he began reaching out to his network through emails, texts and regular reminders to build awareness and encourage sign-ups.

“[My] tactic was: constant engagement, reminders, giving a countdown, putting out pictures and staying engaged with people, reminding them about it,” he said. “This was my first time doing it, so that was my strategy.”

He shared that the steady outreach helped build momentum leading up to the event. But for Crawford, it wasn’t just about raising money, it was about creating something meaningful for his community.

“I just wanted to do something helpful, because I know what fundraising can do when we all come together,” Crawford said. “It was another way for us, as disabled veterans, to come together around a common cause.”

When it came time to plan the event itself, Crawford and his chapter decided to host their 5K along the Chesapeake Bay in Yorktown, Virginia, holding it at Fort Monroe during a Veterans Day celebration. They felt it was a fitting location considering the area's rich military history.

On race day, participants gathered to walk, run and show their support for veterans. Friends, family members and local community members all took part, turning the event into something even bigger than Crawford had imagined.

“This is a military community, so I did reach out to other military members that I know,” he said. “We had family members that came out. We had chapter members that came out. We had other members that were just in the local community, that participated in it.”

The event brought together people of all ages and backgrounds. For many, it was a chance to honor loved ones who served. For others, it was an opportunity to learn more about the challenges veterans face after their service and give back for the sacrifices they made to protect our freedoms.

Crawford’s efforts helped his chapter come close to its $3,000 goal and surpass previous fundraising totals, making it a record-setting year. But for him, the most meaningful outcome wasn’t the numbers. It was the sense of connection built throughout the event.

The connection between veterans and their community is what continues to inspire Crawford to stay involved. And it’s what he hopes others will experience as well.

“It's a time to honor our veterans and raise awareness for those veterans who have been injured and have conditions and illnesses from their service,” Crawford said. “It’s a reminder that military service involves lasting sacrifices that deserve respect and gratitude.”
